Eraser

Erasers are inserted between two strings close to the sound board. Other similar plastic materials can also be used.

The erasers mute the sound of the strings. The degree of muting depends on the size of the eraser. The sound can be very dry, almost similar to a percussionists dead-stroke, or only slightly muted and less resonant than a normal string.
